Based on Dja Dja Wurrung country, Clunes is where Victorian gold rush fever was sparked in July 1851, making Australia (for a short time) the richest country in the world. Evidence of those boomtown days remain in the pictureship streets and beautifully preserved architecture of this charming little town (population around 1,881) which is considered the best collection of 19th century buildings in Australia.
Given the architecture of the town, Clunes is a popular location for filming movies and TV shows; including such classics as Mad Max (1979), Ned Kelly with Heath Ledger (2003), and the TV series The True History of the Kelly Gang (2018).
